CREATIVE CAREERS 2008
Web Designer’s annual university and new-blood special is upon us again!
Yes, it’s May 2008 and our time for celebrating the new wave of web design, new media and graphic design. For anyone looking to get into some of the country’s best universities or just gauge their skills against rising student stars, this is precisely the place for you. Into the mix you’ll also find information to gain added exposure for your work, opting for the nonacademic route and obtaining the relevant skills required for when opportunity comes knocking. Importantly, we’ll be hearing from agency and recruitment bigwigs about what anyone looking for a creative career must have and learning what a big software company thinks about the state of fledgling talent across the globe.
Last year’s issue was such a success that it proved instrumental in gaining job opportunities at top design firms for the featured undergraduates. If you’ve missed the boat this year, then pencil the date into your diary and ensure you get involved for 2009 – the creative world is your lobster…

BOURNEMOUTH
BA (Hons) Interactive Media Production

COURSE LEADER: Mik Parsons
INSTITUTION: Bournemouth University
LOCATION: Talbot Campus
URL: http://courses.bournemouth.ac.uk/Course.aspx?course=30
EMAIL: mparsons@bournemouth.ac.uk
QUOTE:
The BA (Hons) Interactive Media Production degree is designed to enable students to develop their potential as multimedia practitioners within the interactive media industries.
Interactive media includes topics spanning computer games, websites, mobile technologies, webcasting, weblogging, podcasting, CD/DVD production, web advertising, web databases, interactive television, online learning materials and more!
Students on this course make a range of interactive media projects, combining sound, video, graphics, words and animation with interactivity. In other words, students create projects that you don’t just sit and watch, but that you have to actively play with or use in some way.
The course aims to give students a good grasp of interactive media production principles, an aesthetic appreciation of interactive media products and an understanding of the contexts of interactive media production and technologies.
Also, in order to be an effective producer of interactive media, students learn to understand the changing roles of media and technology and their effect on society. This course is set within a firm professional framework that reflects development and change within the interactive media industries.
The range of courses at the Media School provides an ideal context for exciting multimedia collaborations with computer animators, TV directors, scriptwriters, journalists, music and sound designers.
We are looking for students who are flexible, creative and organised, and who would enjoy the challenge of working in the constantly changing environment of interactive media. The degree aims to produce graduates who will be able to:
Make a significant contribution to interactive media production through a combination of their practical work and their academic learning;
Predict, explore and exploit changes in the current interactive media industries, whether those changes are technical, cultural or commercial;
Enter into current media debates

STUDENT PROFILE: ARNI LOCHNER
PROJECT: THE EIGHTH DAY
The Eighth Day is an online interactive graphic novel. It features six full page spreads of illustration in the form of comic book panels, which are interactive in two modes. The first mode is the Full Page mode, where the user is able to click on individual panels to hear sounds and see animations from within that panel. The other mode is Experience Mode, which displays a full page enlarged to the size of a double spread, which scrolls automatically with sound and animation in sync with what the user sees.

The story for The Eighth Day is set in the not-too-distant future, where natural conception has become illegal and children are now designed. It centres on a 15-year old, naturally conceived girl called Bo. She is beginning to realise that she has a special ability within herself known as photographic reflexes. The realisation of this power sparks a massive uproar of the artificial versus the naturally conceived. Bo begins to fear for her life as the government attempt to eliminate any proof of her existence.

The website allows users to gain in-depth knowledge on characters, the creation process, the back story, as well as letting them discuss the graphic novel with other readers.

Arni Lochner recently won the Broadcast Education Authority Interactive Media Contest in the USA. He won first prize and also the Best of Festival Awards. He went out to Las Vegas in mid-April to showcase his work and collect his awards.

STUDENT PROFILE: LEO LANKSFORD
PROJECT: MEDIALIB
Medialib is a project-support resource specifically targeted at media students, however, it has been designed in such a way that it can easily be expanded to provide support for a wide variety of academic fields. Medialib is the missing link in the production of high-quality academic media projects and products. At Medialib’s core is a system that is built for the sole purpose of assisting students with their project work. It is a place where students can go and browse hundreds of high-quality stock media across a wide spectrum of platforms, from images to audio and video to narratives, and several more. One of the main aims of Medialib, along with creating a huge library of stock media, is to increase cross-course collaboration on projects, which in turn will increase the quality of students’ portfolios. By allowing students to upload work that they have created, comment on other people’s work and ask for assistance in certain areas from fellow students, Medialib gives students the opportunity to dramatically increase the quality of their work and that of their team-working skills.

PROJECT: TOTAL SOURCE SKATEBOARDS
Total Source Skateboards is an online guide for beginner skateboarders. The site covers all the necessary information that a person is required to know to confidently begin skateboarding and progress. The site is themed and laid out like a skateboard shop, and uses animation to give users the impression they are moving around. The site’s content is separated into six categories, each represented by a particular shop feature. Each category deals with an individual aspect of skateboarding and uses a range of visual media to communicate with the user. The use of animation, video and interactive Flash elements are combined to create a visually rich environment that acts as an effective learning platform. The site is targeted at all skateboarders, though, due to one particular feature that provides a guide to skateparks in the UK, it is predominantly aimed at British citizens.

STUDENT PROFILE: LUCY BURCHILL
PROJECT: THE KINGDOM OF LILLENDELL
The Kingdom of Lillendell is an online high-bandwidth adventure game set in an enchanted kingdom deep below the moon’s surface. The aim of the game is to allow the user to explore a magical world, interact with the objects and master how to complete the games objective. The aim of the game is to create the perfect nightmare or dream, and give it to the humans of Earth.

The game opens with an introductory story, explaining that fifty feet below the moon’s surface lies an enchanted kingdom called Lillendell. Lillendell is inhabited by a small community of fairies that work to create dreams and nightmares. In order for the kingdom to survive, the fairies must gather human snores that give energy to Lillendell. All the objects in the kingdom hold magical powers, which the fairies mix and match together to produce powerful effects, so the object is to collect more snores. The more disturbed the human’s sleep is, the more snores will be released.

The project is created in Adobe Photoshop and using Macromedia’s Flash. The aim was to create a semirealistic environment, which incorporates real photography and fantasy art. Its purpose is to be a visual delight for the user. This magical environment is open to everyone to explore on the internet, and to try to understand their own dreams.

STUDENT PROFILE: OLIVER JONES
FEEDBACK: The creative freedoms we’re able to explore on the course let us find our own paths and strengths. We dabble in anything from animation, 3D game environments to bog-standard web design, so the process really helps us find where our strengths lie. In my own case, I have a real passion for web design… even more so after my experiences on placement with Maze, a local web design agency in Kent. Our course has developed into a really tight unit… we all work in the same labs and go through the same coding headaches, so we try and get in as many nights out together as we can. Hopefully, our graduation show (Pixel Pier), due this coming June, will be testament to how far we’ve all come.
AMBITION: I’m steadily becoming more and more competent in all areas of web design, and my current project is pushing my skills even further. I really enjoy learning new tricks and effects: things that set a website apart from others. Hopefully, after I graduate, someone will take a chance on a young web designer from Kent! My ambitions will always remain true to whatever I do in the future; I just hope that remains with web design.
PROJECT: FEMALE FIXTURE
Female Fixture aims to provide females in the Dorset area with the necessary online tools to help organise and structure their own sporting activities in netball, volleyball and basketball. Users are able to create profile pages for themselves, leagues, clubs and teams, and consequently let other users join. The idea is that users will then become active in their use of the site… uploading statistics, fixtures and results, creating an intricate network of sporting data. The other set of users will have different motives for visiting the site, with a desire to use and search the leagues, clubs and team data collected in order to find a way of getting into sporting activities locally. The simplistic design and layout of the site aims to provide an effective hassle-free user experience.

STUDENT PROFILE: EVELYN MOORE
FEEDBACK: During the course we are constantly learning new aspects of interactive media, from design, filming and animation, to web design and coding. I have enjoyed learning new things, and am now able to experiment and develop a specific skill in the final year. Guest speakers have given me a great insight to the industry, and I feel the course has prepared me well for the workplace.
AMBITION: I’d like to explore and develop my web design skills, and both coding and design. Ideally, I’d like to work for a company and perhaps freelance in the future.
PROJECT: EXHIBITQUE.COM
Exhibitique.com is an online art portfolio and social networking site. Members can display their work in a customisable gallery for other artists and potential employers to view. In addition to this, users also have their own informal profile for all their social networking needs.

Exhibitique gives users the ability to comment and receive comments on work, sell work and communicate with others in a variety of ways. A voting system means that users can compete against other artists and have the opportunity to get their work exposed. Once registered, members also have the ability to search for and advertise jobs easily and efficiently. In addition, Exhibitique’s users will be able to read and write their own reviews on artwork. The Search feature allows any visitor to the site to find the type of artwork, artist or review they seek.

STUDENT PROFILE: NICHOLAS TOCHER
COURSE: Digital Media
FEEDBACK: The course has allowed me to explore a wide range of digital media applications and learn about the design process.
AMBITION: Upon completion of the course, I would like to pursue a career in visual effects for television and film.
PROJECT: A SITE FOR SORE EYES
The project was based around a predetermined, fictional company called The Oxygen Shop. The premise of my site was to promote the sale of oxygen/gas masks and breathing apparatus in a fictional post-apocalyptic setting. The visual language was based on futuristic visions of the early/mid-Twentieth Century, reinforced by the sepia tones and a chaotic font, which heightened the dramatic effect.

STUDENT PROFILE: MATEJ PAVLICEK
COURSE: Digital Media
FEEDBACK: I enjoy learning and reading about the latest digital media technologies and techniques. Live project briefs let us experience working with real companies and clients.
AMBITION: I like the challenge of working on different types of digital media projects, especially web design, animation, 3D modelling and film. One day I hope to work for a company that lets me explore and combine the world of reality and digital fiction.
PROJECT: TOPIC TRADE WEB SITE
I tried to create a contemporary-looking, Flash-based multimedia website that was both stylish and accessible for users.

This project was created for a family business in my home country of Slovakia. I spent time developing it throughout my second year at university. I enjoyed the freedom of the brief and discovering and learning about a variety of web design techniques.

STUDENT PROFILE: NILA WATSON
COURSE: Digital Media
FEEDBACK: What was great was the freedom to create design work without certain restrictive boundaries – I had previously worked in industry, where clients usually dictate. Also the interest, assistance and support received from lecturers throughout my projects.
AMBITION: I would like to continue working in digital design and interaction, and further my studies by completing a master’s degree next year.
PROJECT: FIFTH COLUMN
My images show promotional print material and an exhibition space for a digital graffiti project involving LED torches (rather than spray cans). The project was entitled ‘Paint the Town LED’ and focused on getting young people to interact with their environment without resorting to vandalism.

Posters, promo flyers, business cards, etc, needed to retain an underground urban feel, and appeal to the teenager target audience. The project was trialled at Transition Skatepark in Aberdeen, and is now going to be part of an interactive architecture project with Peacock Visual Arts in Spring 2008.

STUDENT PROFILE: ANDREW MCMANUS
COURSE: Digital Media
FEEDBACK: I really enjoy the relaxed environment while learning about design and creative processes.
AMBITION: To work in the field of Illustration and/or animation.
PROJECT: KNOTS AND CROSSES
I wanted to create a website to promote the work of Ian Rankin. I wanted to translate the mood from his novels using imagery from around Edinburgh, combined with strong colours and other elements created using watercolours. I used Photoshop, Dreamweaver then Flash for the animated elements.

STUDENT PROFILE: IAN MAYS
COURSE: Digital Media
FEEDBACK: I am mostly interested in web and interface design. The course has given me the opportunity to tackle a range of design projects throughout my study, with experienced mentors who have encouraged my creativity and taken my concepts and solutions to new levels.
AMBITION: I’d like a career in web and interface design and hope to further develop my skills in 3D and motion graphics.
PROJECT: STYLEDESIGN
The StyleDesign project uses a Flash interface to illustrate the fundamentals of face shape in hair design. The project aims to improve hair styling by graphically representing the issues relating to different face shapes. The use of 3D models that rotate allows the user to see multiple perspectives simultaneously, an improvement on existing 2D imagery.

STUDENT PROFILE: LUBOS BURACINSKY
COURSE: Digital Media
FEEDBACK: The course is a great place to develop your skills and talents, and get some constructive feedback and direction along the way.
AMBITION: I hope to start my own design consultancy and produce outstanding work that focuses on great attention to detail. I have a great enthusiasm for digital media and will work hard to achieve my ambitions of creating great design.
PROJECT: OPTION 1 SECURITY
Option 1 Security was a live website project for one of the biggest manned security providers in Scotland. The customer was looking for a formal-looking website that utilised Flash and promoted their services.
PROJECT: DIALnDRINK
Dial’n’Drink is a concept website for a company looking to launch a new service.

COURSE: New Media
FEEDBACK: The course has really pushed my skills and constantly demands the highest standards. It has improved my work and changed the way I develop ideas and projects.
AMBITION: My ambition in later life is to run my own company. Whether it be from web design to manufacturing, it’s my true aim. I strongly feel that my experience in new media and design will always benefit my career even if I’m not within the industry itself.
PROJECT: ISMYSPORT.CO.UK - LAUNCHING SUMMER '08
ismysport.co.uk is a website project that will give players the opportunity to find local sports clubs with ease. The site will not only be a great tool for current players, but make it easy for those that don’t already play sport to get involved. Sports other than football are very poorly represented on the internet, leaving a large gap in the market that I really hope my project will fill!

STUDENT PROFILE: BEN SHAW
COURSE: New Media
PROJECT: ONE MAN'S OPINION
One Man’s Opinion are an up-and-coming American rock band looking to expand their current fanbase. The band approached me in the summer of 2007 and asked for an innovative way to attract new fans and reward their current fans.

The new One Man’s Opinion website is an online community application. The site is a place for fans to collaborate with each other, and the band themselves, by uploading their concert photographs, reviews of the band’s music and YouTube videos of the group in action. One Man’s Opinion wanted to give their fans a chance to have their own opinion. Current ‘wikinomics’ trends of the internet make this the ideal time to instigate a project such as this.

This project is the culmination of my time on the New Media BA Honours degree at the University of Leeds. I left college with qualifications in computer networking, however, I found myself to be more interested in innovation, design and creativity. This lead me to the New Media degree programme at Leeds, which has helped me more than I can say. As I am coming to the end of the three-year university course, I now feel ready and able to take my skills into the industry and pursue my dream career as a web designer.

STUDENT PROFILE: LEWIS LITANZIOS
COURSE: New Media
FEEDBACK: If I’m completely honest, the best thing about being at university is the time you have away from commercial lethargy to do your own thing (in a sense), experiment and try and find your own style. A great asset to the course structure is the role of the tutors, who are really supportive, outgoing and allow informal discussion and talks. I’m very aware from speaking to friends and colleagues that this is missing from a lot of other degree programmes these days.
AMBITION: I aspire to design splendid front-end websites, with a programmer to one side and a project manager to keep me from hopping on my BMX too often on the other!
PROJECT: EMMA DALZELL PHOTOGRAPHY
I have a fantastic friend called Emma Dalzell. She’s so enthusiastic about photography, it makes me envious I can’t afford to hire her more often. Her motivation drove me to design and build her a website from scratch to showcase all her wonderful photography. We share similar taste in artwork, clothes and design, so I guess the aesthetic was the easy part. This was my first attempt at a dynamic site and it came relatively easy, thanks to the help of a starter book by David Powers entitled PHP for Dreamweaver 8. Emma was really pleased with the result and it’s nice to see her making use of it when the unbeatable Flickr is just a click away.
PROJECT: E COUNT
I Count, the organisation for the prevention of climate change, set a brief to create a one-minute viral animation to be used online to help promote awareness of the abuse we’re causing our planet, resulting in climate chaos. My response to the brief was to create a dystopian planet, full of pollution, abandonment and degeneration, then flip it upside down, animating the change through to its complete antithesis. It made me appreciate the significance of using ActionScript in animation.
PROJECT: LDEXTERLDESIGN FOLIO V2 (WEB)
I can never understand it when I read that people find it hardest to work on their own stuff. It heals the soul to work away from the constraints of client briefs and brand guidelines. My current ‘folio site has been a constant labour of love, and although I’m extremely eager to redo it, it has served its purpose nobly over the past few years, gaining me a wealth of freelance work (the majority of which I’ve had to turn down unfortunately) and compliments from friends. The blog is getting rather expansive now, contributing to load time, and the posts require permalinks and could really benefit from feeds, as I’m starting to receive emails from people globally requesting more accessible readership.

STUDENT PROFILE: PETER PEARSON
COURSE: New Media
FEEDBACK: Leeds is an awesome city for students as there is so much going on. The student areas are friendly places to live with a really good atmosphere.

New Media was a great choice for me as it has allowed me to work with a wide range of technologies, while keeping a strong emphasis on design. The university facilities for our course are really good and the staff are always willing to help.
AMBITION: I am looking to work for a web design agency where I am using a broad range of skills developing new and innovative websites, animations and all types of web work. I hope to expand and develop my skills across the board before potentially working freelance at some point in the future. After graduating I hope to work in or around London, provided I can afford it!
PROJECT: NEVER STOP DREAMING
Never Stop Dreaming was my response to the 2007 D&AD animation brief in which we were to animate one of 15 steps to the I Count guide for climate cool. The step I chose was about encouraging viewers to think about how the world could be if we were more energy-efficient. My animation follows a character imagining the effect recycling a bottle is having on the world as he walks through it. The subdued colour scheme emphasises the bright pink embodiment of his imagination as it interacts with the environment around it. This piece was created entirely in Flash using a range of techniques.
PROJECT: PETER-PEARSON.COM
This project is a personal portfolio site built to showcase my work in a range of practices, including web design, animation, print and personal artwork. Video work is soon to follow. The site utilises Flash elements integrated seamlessly into the main design to offer an aesthetically pleasing experience for the user. The paint splatter effect was made using a series of brushes I created for use in Photoshop.

PROJECT: LETMEINLEEDS
Letmeinleeds.com is an ambitious project that is currently in development. It targets the well-established nightclubbing market in one of the most popular and vibrant cities in the country. The PHP and MySQL-driven site uses Flash technology to deliver dynamic and live data about the queueing times for clubs all over the city. The site allows users to assess trends, view historical data, enter competitions and much more, using their desktop PC from home or their mobile phone while on the move.

FEEDBACK: Being free to experiment and embrace mistakes.
AMBITION: To be in an environment that lets me experiment and is involved in different mediums of the creative industry.
PROJECT: OPEN DAY
Poster pitch promoting the University of Brighton Open Day, made with graphic designer Ciara Phelan and illustrator Adam Ellison. Our idea was simply to create all the elements not relying on the computer. The biggest difficulty was to create the headline text, which was made out polystyrene, and coated then hung from the ceiling using fish wire. We built the set over one week, adding different elements.
PROJECT: ROLLING FOR SIXES
A short film about two dice trying to reach a double-six. This was a project with fellow creative Daniel Silburn. It took two weeks to plan and make the dice. I enjoyed this project because it meant having to project-manage a lot of different elements, making sure everything came together on time and within our very small budget. Filming took two days due to good weather!
PROJECT: STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
A project made in a letterpress workshop, highlighting a strength and a weakness. The piece is made from woodblock letters, which have been individually placed. Once the composition was completed, I decided to try and ink the text with a gradient of colours. This was a process that took a long time to get right.
PROJECT: ILLUSTRATIONS
A series of illustrations that are part of an ongoing project, based on how the convergence of technology is slowly growing and becoming more and more invasive.

LONDON
INSTITUTION: London Metropolitan University
LOCATION: London, UK

STUDENT PROFILE: JIMMY SALERMO
COURSE: Digital Media
URL: www.digitalspaceboy.co.uk
FEEDBACK: The best thing about the course I’m doing has been the freedom to learn my own way and choose my own coursework projects. The course structure is quite flexible and the modules varied, so it’s been possible to tailor the course according to my interests while still getting a wider understanding of the digital media industry as a whole. The balance between theory and practice has been good, and I feel I have been able to address my weaknesses efficiently.
AMBITION: I would love to work for a web design/design company in London for the next five or so years, at least. Speaking of bigger ambitions, I’m hoping to be able to start my own design company some day. I’m especially interested in working across multiple media with varied interactive projects and print design. I’d like to keep learning as much as I can and push my boundaries, and also utilise my talent in projects that challenge the audience to think about major issues such as global warming, child welfare and homophobia. In idealistic terms, I’d like to make a difference. And maybe make a name for myself in the process…

One very important thing for me is to be able to design organically, using hand drawings and real textures as far as possible. The creative aspect of web design is what I’d like to focus on – without forgetting the importance of efficient code and optimisation, of course!
PROJECT: DIGITAL SPACEBOY - MY OWN WEB PORTFOLIO
I’ve recently redesigned my own website. I’m most excited about building my Downloads section. I started out by using free vector packs, Photoshop brushes and WordPress themes by other designers; I used to pick them apart and see how they worked, and stock vectors saved me a lot of time in the early stages. Now I’d like to be able to give something back, and I plan to make time to add new things at regular intervals. I’m also going to introduce a blog and a doodles section, where I’ll display my drawings and illustrations that aren’t part of any specific project.
PROJECT: FOIL MEDIA WEBSITE
This project was my final year work placement. I made contact with a web design company in Canada who wanted their website to get a fresh new look, while still keeping their current image and their values displayed on the site. Making this site was a wonderful experience, as I was able to design my own take on an existing website and add my own touch to it. The resulting website is my favourite of the ones I’ve made. I think it looks clean and professional but still warm and inviting – just like the company! The redesign hasn’t been fully implemented yet, but the company is already using some graphics from the new design on their existing site.
