Don’t have the time to struggle through clumsy, self-hosted CMS installations? Get up and running in minutes, and focus your energy on your design and content instead
In recent years, Squarespace has become widely recognised as a sophisticated, intuitive solution for creating and managing websites, blogs and portfolios. Tens of thousands of customers use the service every day, from large corporations like Marc Ecko Enterprises to internet celebrities like Digg founder Kevin Rose.
The appeal of Squarespace is the browser-based interface. Without the need to download packages, install software or learn PHP, customers can literally get a site up and running in minutes. Every pixel of the experience – from the user interface to the public-facing websites they create – is engineered and animated to be flawless by its small team of perfectionists.
In this tutorial, designer/developer Krystyn Heide will show you how easy it is to get a site up and running quickly, and with a little extra effort, tweak one of Squarespace’s professionally designed style templates to make it uniquely your own.

01 Create an account
To get started, create a Squarespace account at https://www.squarespace.com/signup. No credit card is required, and you’ll have 14 days to experiment for free. Sign up is simple; choose a site/login name and password, enter your email address, and don’t forget the letters in the image to confirm you’re a live human being.
02 Learn the modes
Tada! Your blog is now live at http://yourname.squarespace.com – all without any package downloading, installation or similar hullabaloo. First, get to know the four editing modes in Squarespace – Content, Structure, Style and Preview – by hovering the icons in the top-right corner of your site.
03 Enter basic information
Add some basic personal information to let people know who you are and to give them a little taste of what your blog is all about. The next step is to switch to Structure mode, click the strip that reads ‘Edit website header’, and enter your Site Name, Subtitle, and information for the title bar.
04 Establish architecture
Hover over elements in the navigation and sidebar to rename or remove them. Click ‘add page’, ‘add widget’, or ‘insert new section’ to create new areas of your site and populate the sidebar. Tip: New modules are disabled by default – they won’t show up on your live site until you’re ready to enable them.
