iOS 4 and signal troubles...

Apple under attack from disappointed customers having trouble with iOS 4.0 and the new iPhone itself

It seems the hotly anticipated launch of Apple’s new smartphone isn’t running as smoothly as Jobs and Co would have wished. Users are complaining about signal reception and dropped calls due seemingly to the way they are grasping the handset. Lefthanded users are obstructing the antenna strips located around the metal edge of the device casing, prompting Apple to suggest that the phone should be held differently or encased within Apple’s own £29 ‘bumper’ case to avoid such troubles. It has been suggested that this week might prompt an updated version of the recently released iOS4, which itself has been met with mixed reactions from disgruntled upgraders. While some have rported improvements in performance across 3GS model iPhones, those still shackled to the older 3G devices are experiencing the kind of slowdown many might have expected from such dated hardware.

However, horror stories of crashing apps, loss of wi-fi connectivity, vanishing data and even phones being ‘bricked’ during the update process are rife on web forums and will hopefully be alleviated over the coming months.

Meanwhile – have you had a bad experience with iPhone 4 or iOS4? Or have you upgraded and been really impressed with what Apple have done? Leave us your comments below…

My 3G is just really slow. Hoping my iPhone 4 works well.

I’ve upgraded to iOS4 on my 3GS and feel a bit underwhelmed to be honest. No problems during update process, all main features running ok on the surface and certainly just as quick but the new multitasking facilities are clunky. Now all apps/services just keep running regardless of whether you want them to, providing another layer of interaction in constantly double tapping the home button to kill them. Folders only hold 12 apps for some odd, unknown reason and therefore those with vast collections of similar app types will just end up having numerous category folders with bad icons.

Oh and just as I thought the phone was running perfectly I’ve realised that it can’t spot my Wi-Fi connection, presumably because it has a hidden SSID… (By the way, it worked before)

I’ve had similar teething troubles with Wi-Fi when updating OSX on my MacBook, so Apple aren’t the best unfortunately when it comes to getting this stuff right. In future I recommend giving these big software updates a wide berth until they’ve been fully tested and patched. Anyone else with a similar experience?

I’ve just got the iphone4 and so far so good, signal seems to be fine with me and not had no crashing or anything of that sort. It’s a great phone and touch wood it carries on the way it has been the last few days and I’ll be more than happy!

I updated my 3G iPhone to iOS4 the other day, it took an extremely long time to complete the process; about 4 hours! Since then my phone has been misbehaving, going slowly, app crashes, at one point this evening it even appeared to reset itself and remained locked on the Apple loading screen for about 10 minutes. As for iOS4 I can’t really see any benefit from the update. What are supposed to be the benefits anyway?… I don’t know why I bothered!

iPhone 3G – 16GB: no problem upgrading, some apps work badly, battery lasts almost half time and, worse of all, my phone can’t spot any Wi-Fi connection!!!

Since installing iOS4 on my iPhone 3G I’ve been experiencing the signal dropping issue which was originally attributed to the new iPhone 4.

The fact it appears to have started since iOS4 was released points to a software issue and not a hardware issue.

I guess we just wait for a new software update to be released, when/if Apple can fix the problem!!
