Are apps better than the web?
The iPad, iPhone 4 and Google Android boast an impressive selection of apps. But, surely apps are nothing more than a neatly packaged web presence?

They are neatly packaged web presences, but the fact that they’re customized for your hardware/software makes them far superior to a mobile version of a page which is meant to suit all mobile pieces of tech.
Great Post!
I have just bought an iPhone and have to say I am loving the apps, well most of them. They are tailored for the iPhone and always look great and generally work as intended. The free collection of apps is impressive, but to get an extended version of a free app I have to pay. This is what bothers me. Apple is making ridiculous amounts of money by effectively packaging the web. A well designed iPhone site is just as good as an app, plus you dont have to pay for it and everyone gets to see it.
The problem is that the web is that you require a connection and until we work all the kinks out of connectivity an app will always win over the masses.
I tried to promote Google Docs for a local non-profit that had been struggling with Open Office. Problem is that they get poor internet service (the connectivity is shared with a neighbour who ‘donated’ it) so what was working great for me would have shut them down.
You must always consider the online barrier when comparing web apps to desktop apps. ;)
