New Apple-approved version of the Opera Mini browser tops the iTunes charts worldwide

As you can see from the images posted here, popular browser brand Opera has taken the iPhone app market by storm since launch last month:

Apple said “Yes”, and iPhone users around the world said, “Yes, please”. Opera Mini was downloaded more than one million times in its first day of availability in each market. Opera Mini is currently the number one iPhone app in the 22 featured Apple App Stores on their site, as of 8 a.m. CET today.

According to Apple’s download count, Opera Mini has been added to 1,023,380 Apple devices. Opera Mini is the world’s most popular browser that brings the Web to nearly any mobile phone. Opera submitted its browser to Apple on March 23, following the unveiling of Opera on iPhone during the Mobile World Congress, CTIA and SXSW. Initial previews of the browser garnered rave reviews, indicating that Opera Mini delivers up to six times the speed, especially on congested networks, and significant Web-page compression to keep roaming and pay-per-MB costs at a minimum.

“Today iPhone users have a choice, and, as the numbers show, they are eager to explore new and faster ways to surf the Web on the iPhone – especially during heavy Web traffic,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “With any widely available and frequently downloaded Opera product, we are appreciative of all the feedback we are getting, as it helps us to continually improve our product and better meet the needs of our users.”

It’s great that Apple are allowing other web browsers on to the iPhone but I’m still disappointed that they can’t resolve their differences with Adobe and add flash to the iPhone.

Glad to see Apple is allowing a new browser on the iPhone. Shame they still want to prohibit Adobe Flash. Surely, their sales will suffer because of this, as Adobe is putting Flash on pretty much every other new non-apple phone.

Shame that they still can’t get flash to work on the iPhone. Surely they stand to lose business as other phones start to add flash functionality.

      I agree @Lawrence

It’s really not an issue for Apple. Firstly, most of the professionally made sites people “require” Flash for are now using HTML5 instead, such as Youtube, Vimeo etc.

And secondly, Apple are quite aware that the addition of Flash support would be the death of the appstore, which brings them more revenue than they would lose from the minority who would choose not to buy an iPhone due a lack of Flash.

Adobe need to get themselves on the HTML5 gravy train sharpish!

      Two thoughts:

      1. Good on you, Apple, for relaxing your death-grip a little.

      2. Oh my God. Opera mini is an AWFUL browser from a web designer’s point of view. It has irredeemable bugs on certain sites where clicking a link has the effect of clicking a random link on that page (no, I don’t understand why either – I’ve been told the cause is that it’s continually reloading in the background), and the rendering… it will make you love IE6. Opera on the desktop has its little quirks {such as with h1 text-indents on image replacements) but Opera Mini is insane. And on a Wifi or HSDPA connection, it’s actually slower.

The iPhone’s original browser, on the other hand, is superb.

I wonder if Apple only allowed this because it’s so bad?
